Wandering Watch Hill & Beyond
There was a time when I was practically counting down the days until I could leave Rhode Island. Then there was last summer when I was sweating in the Delaware humidity, haunted by the interminable hum of cicadas. It made me desperate for my childhood summers; summers spent at Watch Hill, trying for the brass ring on the carousel, and begging for ice cream. Now, I’m somewhere in between not wanting to be in Rhode Island and being very grateful to be experiencing some semblance of those Rhode Island summers I loved.
These song lyrics – which my grandma has been reciting since February – capture my sentiments best: “How ya gonna keep’em in the farm after they’ve seen Paree”? "Paree" as in Paris. Well, I’ve been back on the “farm” for two months now, and I am no farmgirl. I do appreciate that my metaphorical farm is a beach town, but when you’ve found your heart is Paris, almost everything pales in comparison.
That said, a couple of weeks ago, I started taking long walks to emulate that aspect of a city lifestyle and to have a moment where I can disconnect from everything else. So far, it's done wonders for my mental clarity, and it has forced me to pause, take in my surroundings, and admire the idyllic scenes of the Ocean State. After all, there is a reason that Taylor Swift bought a house down here ;)
Anyways, here is a collection of photos from my various walks around Watch Hill and the surrounding Westerly area.
