My Top Ten College Essentials

Although college looks a little different this semester, I thought I would share some of my most used items from freshman year. Most of the items are standard to college and can still be used regardless of how you are currently experiencing college classes.

Please keep in mind that every college student is different and some of my favorites may not be applicable to your situation or preferences. In this post, I've only included the links to items I own, obviously you can use this as a source of inspiration to find items that may be better suited to your style. Based on the timing, this post may be irrelevant as I'm sure many of you already have all your supplies. However, prior to my freshman year, I took advantage of holidays and birthdays to ask for some of these essentials.

That being said, I hope this post will be helpful and best of luck this school year!

Having a durable backpack is very important, especially if you plan on spending most of your day outside of your room. This particular backpack is one of the nicest ones I've ever owned. It comes in a variety of colors and can be customized with stripes and a monogram. The slim version worked well for me, however, if you have larger textbooks I would consider the classic version instead.

Even in high school planners have been a staple. In fact, for the past few years I've always placed a nice planner on my Christmas list. I've tried a few different electronic academic planners and calendars in the past, however, I always revert back to the traditional paper planner. Especially now that all of my classes are online, having a place to write down homework assignments, upcoming due dates, online lectures...etc is an essential to staying organized.

I started freshmen year carrying around a lanyard with a wristlet to hold my student ID (which is needed to get into all university buildings), however, found that I was always forgetting to take it with me when I left the dorm. A month into school I ordered an adhesive card case and it made life on campus much easier.

I was hesitant about spending money on AirPods at first because I have a bad habit of losing earphones easily. However, I love my AirPods. Whether I'm studying or walking in between classes, I'm always listening to music and it's nice not have a wire in the way of anything.

Depending on the size of your campus, you may be doing a lot of walking. Between walking to classes and going to study at various locations around campus, I was averaging around 15,000 steps daily. This is why having a comfortable pair of shoes is essential. I enjoy dressing up for class, so these Ted Baker shoes were the perfect balance of style and comfort.

Freshmen year is notorious for being the year everyone gets sick, especially if you are living in a dorm. Fortunately I never got sick (even though my roommate was sick the entire first semester), and I attribute that to my religious use of hand sanitizer. I keep a small sanitizer in my back pack as well as coat pockets. Especially now during COVID times, hand sanitizer should be used frequently.

It's important to stay hydrated and having an insulated water bottle on hand reminds me to drink water. I'm currently using this water bottle from target and I love it. In addition to be very cute, it doesn't leak or sweat.

Surprisingly I've met many people in college that do not drink coffee, however, I am not one of these people. At the beginning of freshman year I relied on various cafes and places around campus to satisfy my 2-3 coffees-a-day routine. Needless to say, it did not take long for me to figure out this was a very expensive habit. To save money and time, I ended up buying this Nespresso machine and it continues to be a highlight of my day. This particular model is very small and skinny which makes it particularly dorm/apartment friendly.

I spend a majority of my time outside or studying in areas that don't have accessible outlets. For these reasons I found it helpful to carry around a portable charger in my backpack.

If you're making iced-coffee at home, tumblers are very handy. I purchased these glass tumblers from Amazon and have used them almost everyday since.
